Absolu Elle,  leading pageant training and personality development academy in India writes on topics relating to pageantry and personality development.
Our topic for today is Communication Skills.
Why people can’t communicate in their life?
The problem is people have not been taught to communicate.
Its not a subject taught in school like Algebra and Geometry or science. This is where we are lacking.
Actually you communicate from the time you are born till you say goodbye to the world.
There are many a times my student ask me, Ma’am can I speak in Hindi or English is compulsory,  I always say, speak in language that you are comfortable but master the skills.
Few points to be discussed under communication skills are:

Communication Barriers: Their are few barriers when it comes to communicating and they are,

  • Improve your fluency – you have to work on fluency of ur language,  to make your English better i suggest you should listen to some good news on CNN and BBC. When your combing your hair, when you are brushing your teeth,  when you are jogging,  walking you must for once not listen to music but some news on this news channel,  the words pour upon your ears, you absorb them, retain them and use them when you wish to
  • Improve your vocabulary – Reading is imperative.  That helps you to make sentences,  phrases and couplets. You should read anything that you can lay your hands on.
  • Avoid Fillers – Fillers are, you know…….., you see……., I mean………. You have words in your mind but you can’t say that’s because you do not have good vocabulary in mind, for that you have to read, enrich yourself by reading and listening to good English news,  or any other language that you choose to communicate. I always believe,  should you want to do it, you will conquer it!!

Develop Superstar Communication Skills:

  • Clarity: clarity of thoughts is followed by clarity of speech.  To have clarity you need to read and develop strong ideas to communicate.
  • Speed: Make sure when you communicate you are not too fast that way people may not understand and if you are too slow,  you become boring. So keep a medium speed while you are communicating.
  • Volume: The volume depends on your number of audience, neither too loud nor too soft.
  • Enunciation: You have to bite every word when you speak,  its not there in any other language like hindi, gujrati or marathi,  but in english enunciation is paramount.
  • Emphasis: Importance given to words in a sentence,  try giving life to the word that needs emphasis,  make it bright and colorful. Eg. Its a wonderful day. So wonderful is the word to be emphasized.

Alert Body Language:  Locking your hand across your body is not good, thats a closed body language,  it should be open. Try crossing from your knee or ankle when you are sitting, maintain eye contact,  when you do that you are known as sincere and honest person. Smile that shows how confident you are. Smile is so much more than a frown.
